It all began during a visit to Leeds Castle in Kent, UK, where hidden within the castle's outbuildings, we stumbled upon a dog collar museum. What an unexpected delight it was! The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail in those collars made us realize that a collar is more than just an accessory - it's an expression of love and pride. These collars served various functions and sported unique designs, catering to dogs of all sizes.

Fast forward about five years, and we welcomed Jesse into our lives - an English Pointer who quickly became the heart of our household. In our quest for a quality leather collar for her, we tried several local options, but they never seemed to stand the test of time. So, we decided to explore further afield and ordered one from the USA. This choice proved to be a winner, as it could withstand Jesse's adventurous spirit, including swims in the dam and rolls in the mud. Even after a thorough cleaning and polish, it still looked as good as new.

Fueled by a newfound passion, I embarked on a leathercraft course and began crafting dog collars and leads for Jesse, who also happens to be my running partner. Thus, Point Leather Collars was born, with Jesse gracing our logo - yes, that's her actual profile!

Things to consider when choosing a collar

1. Size of the dog

The narrow collars are best for smaller breeds, but can also look great on large breeds.

Broader collars are more suitable for large breeds and can be made with extra features like a D-ring at the back.

Solid brass hardware is far stronger than steel, is more expensive and available as an optional extra.

2. Functionality of the collar

We make a variety of collar types like tracking collars (with an AirTag or android tag), training collars, show dog collars, martingale collars, hunting and greyhound collars. Once the function is understood, one can decide on the design detail, type of leather and colour of leather.

A collar can also be purely decorative and more like jewellery, e.g. a very narrow collar with crystals.

3. Style and construction of the collar

Our standard styles include:

Lined collars : Usually consists of a thick layer of leather with nappa leather lining. The stitching limits stretching of the leather and the lining adds comfort and style. They can be made in all widths or tapered, like a greyhound collar.

Double-layered collars : The collar is made up with 2 layers of leather, usually of the same thickness, glued and stitched together for a robust collar. They can be made in any width or tapered for a greyhound collar.

Extra-strong collars for power breeds : The collar is made up with 2 layers of thick leather with a lining added. Extra reinforcement is added around the D-ring and buckle.

Studded collars : Studs can be added to any of the aforementioned styles.

Rolled leather collars: Are made of calf leather and have a rope core. It's a strong and durable collar that will work for all dogs. There are no exposed edges and the collar will last a long time.

4. Is your dog still growing?

A normal collar has 5 holes with the neck size aligned with the middle hole. Let us know if your dog is still growing and we'll align his/her neck size with the smallest setting. We can also add extra holes.

5. Type of leather used

We use vegetable tanned cow hide for our collars and cow nappa as lining. Calf leather is used for the slim profile rolled collars and as trim in rope leads. We occasionally include exotic leathers in our collars.

The vegetable tanned leather changes colour with exposure to sunlight, with light colours turning darker and dark colours lighter. Even the natural, undyed leather will develop a patina, turning into a rich tan over time. A brown, black or tan leather collar will always look good for longer, showing fewer scuff marks.

6. Personalisation

Adding a name and number is included with most of our collars. Choose between stamping or laser engraved text. Extras, such as a laser engraved logo or monogram can be added.

7. Matching leashes

Leash styles include plain leather, rolled leather or rope with leather trim. A lining can be added to the handle. The training leash has a rolled leather handle and can be used on its own or attached to an extension piece.

All of our cat collars come with a safety breakaway buckle. It means that in the unlikely event that your cat is ever caught by their collar, the buckle will slide open under their body weight and allow them to break free from their collar safely. We offer our collars with two choices of breakaway buckle.

	Sensitive to water, the leather expands with exposure to moisture, making the text less legitable	The laser burns the text onto the leather while cutting away the top layer of the leather.
